On this week’s show, we look at two long-standing favorites. In the first half of the show we talk about the extremely popular MJ 12, one of Illusione’s “Original Documents,” and a cigar that seems to be just as hot now as it was when it came out over 10 years ago. Of course, you can’t talk about the MJ 12 without talking about the history behind the name, aliens, conspiracy theories, and shows like The X-Files and the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy that reference the mysterious “Majestic 12.”  
In the second half, we will look at one of Peter Stokkebye's classic pipe tobaccos that continues to remain a favorite after decades, their Cavendish-pressed Virginia Blend--Luxury Twist Flake. We talk about what Cavendish is, how it is done, and why manufacturers do it.

Answering the Call of the Wild: The Don Lino Africa, Black Irish X, and Bananas

We start off this episode by lighting up Nestor Miranda's Don Lino Africa Toro, the Pundo Milia. Kendra paired this medium bodied box pressed cigar with a new rye based banana cocktail she conjured up. Can you pair bananas and cigars? Apparently the Potion Master thinks so. But does it work?
 
In the second half, we switch from a light and creamy cigar to one of the stronger and gruff pipe tobaccos available on the market today, Gawith Hoggarth's Black Irish X, a black, box-pressed coil of rope twist spun tobacco. We didn't fool around pairing with this one and went with The Peat Monster Scotch Whiskey by Compass Box. Is this hard to find tobacco worth hunting down?

Smoking with Kurt Kendall and Charlie Moore

This week cigar legend Kurt Kendall is back and he brought a friend… 10 time Emmy winner and sports TV personality, “The Mad Fisherman” himself, Charlie Moore! Kurt brought his 7-20-4 Factory 57 Toro for us to smoke and some 7-20-4 Original blends from 2013 from his vault. We smoked both with Kurt’s barrel select from High West that is only available at the 7-20-4 Lounge at Twins Smoke Shop in Londonderry NH. There’s no fishing in this episode, but we catch a lot with these two guys, and that’s not just blowing smoke!

Tequila Talia!

Our favorite liquor rep, Talia, is back, this time with Avion Extra Anjeo 44 Tequila. We paired this high end tequila with the Rocky Patel Exclusivo TAA while we heard from her about tequila and what all those terms like Anjeo and Reposado mean,and what makes one tequila better than an other.
In the second half of the show we changed things up by doing a blind tasting of two similar blends of pipe tobacco. When you remove your knowledge of the brand and have no idea about the blend, how does it impact your experience of the tobacco? If that weren’t difficult enough, how do you make a pairing for a blind tasting? Kendra made a blood orange margarita to go with them. It’s a palette expanding experience you don’t want to miss, and that is Not Just Blowing Smoke!

The Aladino Cameroon and Plum Pudding Special Reserve

Cameroon is one of those tobaccos that seems to be appearing in more and more new cigars. Today we light up one of the most anticipated Cameroon releases, the Aladino Cameroon Super Toro, which features a Cameroon wrapper grown by Julio Eiroa on his own farm in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras. We paired it with Down East Aloha Friday, an apple and pineapple hard cider. Was this a complimentary or contrasting pairing or a "comp-trasting" pairing? While we smoke the Aladino, we also talk about the differences between this Honduran grown tobacco and the African variety, and share what our favorite Cameroon cigars are.
For our pipe tobacco we light up what some say is the "Nirvana" of Balkan blends, Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding Special Reserve. Does this coveted crumble cake deserve such praise? We give our take on this popular tobacco. We brought pack a favorite cocktail that Pastor Padron believed would be a perfect pairing with the Plum Pudding Special Reserve-the Penicillin, a cocktail made with Johnnie Walker Black, lemon juice, honey ginger simple syrup, over ice with a float of Laphroaig 10 Year.

Making Marlin Flake Lemonade

It was the best of times it was the worst of times. That basically describes what is this week’s episode of Not Just Blowing Smoke. A perfect storm of technical challenges caused by National outages of cell phone coverage and intermittent Wi-Fi because of said issues, ended up making the first half of what we thought we were recording completely unusable. Which is a damn shame because it was a great Interview With My Father cigars VP of sales Jose Ortega. We had a great time, had a great interview, and really enjoyed reviewing the My Father The Judge TAA Robusto. Unfortunately all of that was lost. As a result, what we have for this week is the second half of the show where are we smoked and reviewed Rattray’s Marlin Flake pipe tobacco. We will have Jose on again in the near future. But we are choosing to see the glass as half full and making lemonade out of lemons by going ahead with putting out the half of the show that we did get.
